Distribution Schmidt (1874) made confusing statements about the origin of his Desmacidon anceps material. He stated that his material of the 18741 Germania expedition was collected near 'Nordshannon' in East Greenland, presumably Shannon Island, but later on the first page he refers to D. anceps from West Greenland. Taxonomy Uncertain. Material labeled as Desmacidon anceps has been investigated by Thiele (1903) and found to consist of six quite different sponges. It is likely that it comprised not only the Greenland 'Germania' Expedition material but also material later collected in SW Norway by the 'Pommerania' Expedition by Schmidt (1875). The description of Schmidt is also impossible to classify as one of these sponges, so the identity of Desmacidon anceps remains incertae sedis. [details]
