The leptomedusan Blackfordia virginica Mayer, 1910, is redescribed with illustrations of material collected recently from the estuary of the River Mira, southwest Portugal. This is the first record of the adult medusa from western Europe. A synposis of previous records is included. It is confirmed that Blackfordia manhattensis Mayer, 1910, is conspecific.
