The systematics of the New Zealand freshwater leeches (Class Hirudinea) of the Family Glossiphoniidae are reviewed, and diagnoses and keys to the families, genera, and species are provided. Glossiphonia multistriata n.sp. is described from the Avon River in Canterbury, while G. heteroclita (L., 1761), G. tasmaniensis Ingram, 1957, and Placobdella maorica Benham, 1906, are redescribed and recorded from a greatly extended range of localities in the North and South Islands. Oligobella novaezealandiae (Dendy and Olliver, 1900) has not been found since the original record from Lake Takapuna; the type material has been lost.
