Description Fig. j. Scales from the cell surface. The smaller scales form an underlayer on the cell, overlain by a layer of the larger ones. The narrow, larger scales are positioned on the cell near the base of the flagella and haptonema. Figure k shows the fourth type of scale, also restricted to the area near the base of the flagella and haptonema. This type occurs singly or a few together on each cell.
