Seasonal and spatial distribution of Pseudocalanus acuspes was studied from March 2002 to May 2003 in the Bornholm Basin of the Central Baltic Sea. During the same time, egg-production was de- termined by in-situ incubations. Highest abundances were reached in May 2002 and April 2003 (618*103 and 869*103 n m-2, respec- tively), a peak in egg production rate was observed in April 2002 (3.6 female-1 day-1) and April 2003 (2.5 female-1 day-1). According to the hydrographic conditions, P. acuspes showed a pronounced onto- genetic vertical distribution. During spring, nauplii were distributed almost exclusively above the halo- cline, while older copepodites inhabited the lower part of the water column under the halocline. During summer, when the thermocline had build up, the ontogenetic vertical distribution was weak- ened but still existent. Highest proportion of the population was found in the water body between the thermo- and the halocline. During the year a clear stage shift from nauplii to older copepodites was seen, but proportion of adult stages never exceeded 19.5 %.
