Begins: "We propose to give in this dissertation a catalog of method and rationale of all species of Hirudinea, both marine and of fresh water, which have been observed until now in Italy. This catalogue is based on the reading and criticism of various authors, from the examination of collections of various museums (University Museums of Turin, Genes, Rome, Moscow, Civic Museum of Genes, Museum of Leide, finally Museum of Breslau, which possessed the important collection of Grube), based on our research in Piómont and in Liguria, finally according to the study of exemptions received from different localities. The list we are preparing is probably very incomplete, since we know almost nothing of the Hirudinea of the region of southern Italy, which offers a lot of interest, because of its probable biotic relations with northern Africa. Despite imperfections, we nevertheless believe that it is necessary to publish the present catalogue, in the hope that it will be the starting point for new research."
