Taxonomy The genus name Thalia Blumenbach, 1798 was first used for Salpa pinnata Forskål, 1775 (now Cyclosalpa pinnata) making Thalia technically a senior synonym of Salpa. The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature ruled under Plenary Powers that Salpa maxima is the type species of Salpa Forskål and Salpa democratica is the type species of Thalia (see: Melville, 1969 in Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature 26 (3): 136-138). [details]
