Authority According to Bakken & Wilson (2005, citing Khlebovich (1996)) Lamarck (1818), who used the unlatinized 'Nereides', is the earliest author of the family. However, Lamarck did not include genus Nereis except by inference in his grouping of genera. Blainville (1818) used the familiar Nereidae and included stem genus Nereis. Thus he may be a better candidate as author. Certainly there are many usages prior to Johnston (1865) to whom Hartman (1959) had attributed authorship of Nereidae. It is puzzling that she did so in her 1959 catalogue as not much earlier (1952:13) she had (correctly) attributed the authorship to Blainville, 1818. [details]
Spelling Spelling and Etymology. One of the 50 daughters of Nereus is a Nereis (f. sing. nom.; Nereidis f. sing. gen.). Article 29.1 of the ICZN Code states that family group name "is formed by adding to the stem of the GENUS name [in this case the stem of the genitive singular Nereidis, which is Nereid-] the latinized suffix -IDAE to form a family name". See also under entry for Nereidae. [Derived from various sources, notably August 1996 Annelida List discussion at http://www.bio.net/bionet/mm/annelida/1996-August/thread.html#373]. Pettibone (1971) was first to emend the original name suffix to derive Nereididae. Under the 4th Edition code of 1999, Art.29.3.1.1 Pettibone's emendation was not mandatory, but is now maintained because it is now in prevailing usage. [details]
