Job description The role of polyunsaturated aldehydes in the life and biology of the marine diatom Skeletonema marinoi in culture and in situ
This project aims at investigating the effects of sublethal concentrations of PUAs on the marine diatom S. marinoi at the cellular level, dissecting the first steps of the signal transduction pathway, mainly investigating the possible production of NO and ROS as first compounds involved in the defensive response to PUAs and/or in the communication pathway eventually elicited. The results will be used to interpret observed patterns of bloom development and decay in the Northern Adriatic Sea, where S. marinoi typically blooms in late winter.
The project frames within the mission of the FEEL Laboratory to investigate the mechanisms ruling the functioning of pelagic ecosystems, and within the aims of the Plankton Ecophysiology and Chemical Ecology group, which aims at exploring the biological and ecological basis of secondary metabolite production in diatoms and other phytoplankton.
The perspective student will acquire many technical skills in flow cytometry, DNA analysis, biochemical techniques, HPLC analysis, sampling skills. This project also involves collaborations with different SZN and foreign groups
preference will be given to student having skills in culturing of phytoplankton and diatom physiology.
