Senior Researcher - Applied Biostatistican
Country of employment
Project Title: Advancing Ireland’s Applied Biostatistical Capacity for Fisheries Management in a Dynamic Environment
Funding Agency: Department of Education, Technological Sector Research Program, Strand III
Description: An exciting opportunity has arisen at the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology for a suitably qualified and motivated person. This position will bring advanced applied biostatistical capacity to a national research team, to better support the assessment and management of marine ecosystems in Ireland. GMIT’s research team works closely with the Irish Marine Institute and with the marine research consortia recently established under initiatives such as Sea Change1 and Beaufort2.
The successful candidate will join a well-established group of researchers at GMIT’s Centre for Marine and Freshwater Research. They will drive research projects, and lead further development of this research team in collaboration with staff in GMIT, the Marine Institute and with the wider fisheries research community. Strong collaboration with the Marine Institute will enable the exploration of large datasets of commercial and survey data. The successful candidate will join existing multi-institutional collaborations, co-author publications, and develop new research programmes with an advanced biostatistical focus.
GMIT is well placed within the west of Ireland marine environment research cluster. Marine-related research is identified as a key priority research area of GMIT. GMIT’s Marine and Freshwater Research staff have a proven record of securing research funding, of working collaboratively nationally and internationally, and of scientific publication. The Senior Researcher will expand this capacity, and further develop the research group through strengthened collaborative links to academic, state agency and industry partners. The appointment is well timed to capitalise on opportunities arising from the recent €1.5 million refurbishment of GMIT’s dedicated marine and freshwater research laboratories.
o A highly motivated researcher with a degree and PhD in a combination of environmental/biological and statistical/computational topics.
o At least three years of experience in data analysis in addition to PhD.
o A strong publication record.
o A demonstrated ability to apply analytical tools to a range of biological/environmental research questions.
o Strong communication skills demonstrating the ability to communicate statistical/numerical concepts to non-experts, and to work effectively in collaborative multidisciplinary environments.
o Knowledge of programming languages and experience of code writing for statistical software packages (e.g. R, SAS, MATLAB).
o Experience integrating extensive biological and environmental datasets, particularly in the marine or fisheries area would be viewed favourably.
o Experience of supervising research projects to completion, and a proven ability to secure research funding are desirable.
o Teaching experience would be an advantage.
o Non EU applicants must have a valid work permit to work in Ireland.
