Vacancy Title Postdoctoral Researcher - Algal Taxonomy
Country of employment Ireland
Job description Applications are invited for a researcher position to work at the Ryan Institute to work as part of the Beaufort Marine Biodiscovery project. The Beaufort Award involves a consortium of three universities (NUI Galway, University College Cork and Queen’s University Belfast). The Beaufort Award is carried out under the Sea Change Strategy and the Strategy for Science Technology and Innovation (2006-2013), with the support of the Marine Institute, funded under the Marine Research Sub-Programme of the National Development Plan 2007–2013.

The overall objective of the Beaufort Award is to develop research capacity in the area of marine biodiscovery. Of particular relevance to the current vacancy is the anticipated output of a strong, networked research capability in taxonomy, screening and characterisation of algae.

Candidates should be excellent algal taxonomists (macro algae), familiar with molecular approaches to taxonomy and phylogeny. The researcher will be expected to develop or continue research based on marine species of the northeast Atlantic. Experience of, or an interest in chemotaxonomy, genomics or other approaches applicable to marine biodiscovery are desirable. As appropriate for a postdoctoral position, the appointed researcher will be expected to develop research projects that build partnerships, activity and capacity within the consortium. This is likely to include collaboration with natural products chemists, information scientists, ecologists and biochemists.

This opportunity offers an excellent opportunity for an algal taxonomist to work within a research group seeking to combine different disciplines within the area of marine biodiscovery. The need for such integration is repeatedly stressed, most recently in the recent ESF Marine Biotechnology position paper.
