MarBEF+Outreach: World Conference on Marine Biodiversity, Aberdeen, September 2011 Posted on 30 September 2009 15:32:00 (1844 reads)
The first World Conference on Marine Biodiversity held in Valencia last year was a great success. The conference highlighted the value of gathering researchers and stakeholders concerned with the marine environment together to assess our current state of knowledge and to synthesise new approaches to researching and protecting our oceans. Building on the success of the Valencia conference, the Second World Conference on Marine Biodiversity will be held in Aberdeen, Scotland (26th-30 Sept, 2011).

Dear all,
It has reached that time in the lifespan of our project when the final publications are being sent to the printers and so I am putting out the second and last call for articles for the the MarBEF newsletter. Bear in mind that this is the last MarBEF newsletter, so this is your last chance to submit an article!
Just as a reminder in this edition there will be a section dedicated to temperate research currently being carried out in the Atlantic and adjacent seas. Also note that this edition of the newsletter will be circulated at the world conference in Valencia.

However, it has reached that time of the year again and Spring has arrived and we are putting out the call for articles for what may be the last edition of the MarBEF newsletter.
In this edition I am particularly keen on encouraging scientists to send in articles on research currently being carried out in the Atlantic Ocean to include the Irish Sea, The English Channel, North Sea and the North Atlantic Ridge etc.

MarBEF+Outreach: More than just cute Knut the polar bear - European expert platform passes research recommendations for sustainable use of biological diversity Posted on 18 May 2007 18:36:00 (2411 reads)
Europe needs more interdisciplinary research in order to face the challenges of biodiversity loss and its sustainable use under global change. This was the message put across by experts at the end of an international conference on European biodiversity research strategy. Dramatic changes are expected above all in agricultural landscapes in the coming years as a result of climate change and the switch to bio energy production. Another problem mentioned was the slow implementation of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). An effective worldwide system of protected areas is still not in sight, according to the experts.
MarBEF+Outreach: Not just dogfish and catfish, sea horses and sea cows – Domestic marine species on the increase Posted on 23 April 2007 10:35:00 (3434 reads)
Common perception would make us believe that domestication of land animals has been very successful, however when compared to the rapid increase in the numbers of marine species becoming domesticated these perceptions may change.
“Domestication has had a higher success rates in the sea relative to that seen in the long history of land species’ domestication” states Dr Marianne Holmer, one of the MarBEF authors from the Institute of Biology, University of Southern Denmark, in a new research paper released in Science entitled ‘Rapid Domestication on Marine Species’.
This modest success in the domestication of land animal species can be attributed partly to the lower diversity of suitable land species compared to the marine environment and the reduced geographical range of terrestrial domestication.

MarBEF+Outreach: Ocean acidification harms shellfish Posted on 16 March 2007 15:39:00 (3097 reads)
In 2100 mussels and oysters are expected to calcify their shells 25 and 10 % slower than nowadays respectively. This will be caused by the continued release and accumulation of CO2 in the air: one third of it will be absorbed by the ocean water, thereby making it more acid. Scientists of the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) report in Geophysical Research Letters, together with a French colleague, on the potentially major consequences for aquaculture and coastal nature.
