Eleven species of Demospongia, mainly from Hiryü-jima (Birö-jima), an islet near Aitsu
Marine Biological Station, Kumamoto University, are reported. Among them, 4 species
[Tedania digitata (O. Schmidt), Halichondria japonica (Kadota), Halichondria okadai (Kadora) and Halichondria panicea (Pallas)] are newly recorded from the Ariake Sea. As Tanita (1968) previously reported 24 species of Demospongia from the Ariake Sea, there are now 28 species of Demospongia known to be in this area. The systematic positions of
the 11 species reported in this paper are indicated in Table 1. External form, spiculation,
and so forth are briefly described for each species.
