Experiments were conducted on the cyclopoid copepod Oithona brevicornis (Oithonidae) to determine the food preference and survival rates.Adult copepods of O. brevicornis were fed with mixed algal diet, unialgal diet monocultures of Chaetoceros wighami. Tetraselmis gracilis, Chlorella vulgaris,Chlamydomonas globosa and Skeletonema costatum) and commercial feeds (wheat bran, rice bran, oil cake, yeast and cow dung). A combined feed of all monocultures (mixed algal diet) in the concentrations of 160 × 10 4 cells/ml oilcake among the commercial feed were found to be most satisfactory in the survival and growth rate. The results indicate that feeding plays an important role in determining the survival rates in O. brevicornis. Key words : Food selectivity, Survival rates, cyclopoid Copepod, Oithona brevicornis, Muttukadu backwaters.
