Foreward: As in the first edition of 1971, this edition of the polychaete fauna not only considers the polychaetes found within the territorial boundaries binding for the entire work "The Fauna of Germany," but also includes species that have previously only been encountered in the neighboring areas of the northern North Sea, the Skagerrak, Kattegat, or Øresund. This has proven useful, as several species from this region have since been found in "our" area as well. The so-called "Archiannelids" have also been included in the edition; these are now known to be a very heterogeneous group, but are indeed polychaetes. The approximate position of some families within the polychaete system is now known; the remaining families have been provisionally placed at the end. Furthermore, this edition includes many new species: scientifically new species, newly discovered species, immigrants, and introduced species. The system is also new, aligning itself with more recent knowledge and, in particular, with the system of Pettibone (1982). Moreover, many nomenclatural changes have occurred in the more than 20 years since the publication of the first edition
