WoRMS taxon details
From editor or global species database
New combination Following Wouters, Karel (see below) this species should be included in the genus Aponesidea (instead of Neonesidea). However, because a new combination which was not published, synonymies or new genus combinations should not be published through the WoRMS website before they are 'officially' established in a paper publication, we keep the old generic assignment.
The comment by Karel Wouters: "I identified this species on the basis of Belgian material (Loc.: De Panne) in 1977. I used the Revision of Recent Bairdiidae of Maddocks, 1969, and identified the species as Paranesidea acanthigera. Comparison of the characters of the genus Neonesidea, particularly the muscle scar pattern, led me to the conclusion that acanthigera does not belong to the genus Neonesidea, but rather to the genus Paranesidea (although the latter genus designation did not seem completely satisfactory to me). When I sent you the species list of Belgian marine ostracods, I used the name which I thought was the most appropriate, namely Paranesidea acanthigera. I know that in WoRMS the species is cited as Neonesidea acanthigera, but I am convinced that this is wrong.
Bearing this in mind, I plunged in the literature, and found a more recent genus, namely Aponesidea Maddocks, 1986. The characters of the type species, and of subsequently assigned species, coincide with the characters of acanthigera . The subsequently assigned species I used are Aponesidea ifatyensis Maddocks, 1991 and Aponesidea sp. A and sp. B. of Jellinek, 1993 . These three species are very similar to acanthigera, and I therefore propose to assign the species acanthigera to the genus Aponesidea.
The new combination then becomes Aponesidea acanthigera (Brady, 1868)." [details]
