Description Thallus bright to deep blue-green, expanded, usually forming large, thin mats. Trichomes straight, ± parallel arranged, rarely curved, frequently also screw-like coiled or ring-like circled, with an average length of 750 μm, pale to bright blue-green, sometimes greenish to yellow-green, motile with considerable gliding and oscillation but without rotation, (1) 1.8-2.2-3 (3.5-4) μm wide, not constricted at the usually translucent cross-walls, not attenuated or very slightly attenuated at the ends, not capitate. Cells 2-3x longer than wide, (2.5) 3-9 μm long; cell content pale blue-green, commonly with (less frequently without) 1-4 (6) cyanophycin granules on either or both sides of the cross-walls; thylakoids in section concentrically-arranged, peripherally and parallel oriented to the longitudinal cell axis, in transverse section with triangular-orientation of the (thylakoid) stacks; with two rows of junctional pores at the cross-walls girdling the trichomes. Apical cell (in natural material) rounded, hemispherical, rarely flat-rounded, without calyptra or thickened outer cell wall; however, according to Romo et al. (1993), the trichome ends of this species in culture are narrowed, sometimes slightly curved and rounded-capitate, and therefore this material is comparable with G. ionicum. Numerous subspecific taxa of Oscillatoria amphibia were described, e.g.: var. robusta W. et G. S. West 1911, var. nigricans (Hans-girg) Forti 1907, var. major Playfair 1915, var. aspera Playfair 1915, var. maxima Playfair 1915, f. contorta West 1909, f. tenuis Anisimova in Elenkin 1949, f. circinata Anagnostidis 1961; their taxonomic value has to be revised.  [details]
