Biology Type of larval development: short planktonic (non-planktotrophic) inferred from prodissoconch morphology (Malchus & Warén, 2005) [details]
Diagnosis Shell small, up to 10 mm in height, solid, oval in shape but markedly oblique, relatively inflated, with dorsal margin nearly straight. Umbo slightly anterior, small but prominent. Ligament small, in a triangular resilifer below the umbo. Sculpture of flat comarginal cords, much wider than the interspaces, and fine radial striae, giving a reticulated appearance on the outside of the valves. Hinge narrow, slightly bent, with 5-6 teeth on each side. Inner margin of valves with indistinct crenulations, more marked on the antero-ventral margin, on the posterior side there are 2 or 3 internal ribs that run from the umbo to the postero-ventral margin. Exterior dirty white. Periostracum forming yellowish-brown, hairy projections which are arranged radially, becoming more dense and longer towards the postero-ventral part. [details]
Distribution Eastern Atlantic, from Bay of Biscay to Morocco, also in the Canary Islands and the Azores; doubtful occurrence in the Mediterranean where collected valves are probably all fossil. Western Atlantic from Newfoundland to the Caribbean.
Gorringe, Ampère, Josephine and Seine seamounts, common in 270-1360 m; Great Meteor, Hyères, Irving, Plato and Atlantis seamounts, common in 420-1000 m.
