Abstract
The productivity of aquatic populations has received much attention since the International Biological Programme during which several books appeared that much influenced later developments. One of the important consequences was the standardization of concepts and symbols and the acquisition of a large body of data which had its theoretical roots in the paradigm of trophic organisation of ecosystems.
