Abstract
DHL has developed a special model testing technique for determination of manoeuvring coefficients, which is used in combination with straight line towing. A free sailing ship model is provided with two air propellers. These propellers excert lateral forces, which are controlled by a computer.

The paper discribes the system, including the instrumentation and method of analysis. Some results of recent investigations are shown and further applications of the system are discussed.
