Abstract
Using radiochemical techniques a study has been nmade of the aliphatic hydrocarbons of certain algae and also of a mixed zooplankton culture which had been allowed to graze on 14 C labelled Phaeodactylum. In each case only a small number of specific compounds in the alkane array were labelled. The much wider range of hydrocarbons found in harvested marine mixed plankton samples suggests that some of this hydrocarbon may be of exogenous origin.
