Abstract
    De paarse buisjesspons Haliclona (Soestella) xena is in 1977 voor het eerst in Nederland ontdekt. Het duurde echter nog tot 1986 vooraleer deze voor de wetenschap ongekende soort beschreven werd en een wetenschappelijke naam kreeg. Anno 2009 heeft de soort zich verspreid langs de Nederlandse kust, zowel in Zeeland als in de Waddenzee. In België is deze spons voor het eerst gesignaleerd in 1988 in de jachthaven van Zeebruggen en in 2009 ook in de Oostendse Spuikom. Deze paars-rode tot lichtbruine spons hecht zich vast op allerhande substraten in marien en brak water.
