Alien species Proasellus coxalis is a fresh water sow bug which originally only occurred in from rivers and estuaries around the Mediterranean Sea. Since 1931 this species is known to spread through Western Europe, by attaching itself to ship hulls or through the ballast water.
Its presence was first noted in Belgium in 1998. Today it can be found in almost all fresh water bodies of West and East Flanders. Lacking good swimming abilities, fresh water sow bugs can mainly be found crawling between water plants, on rocks or on the soil feeding on detritus. [details]
Taxonomy Note: Guy Magniez considers this species to be a superspecies made up of several species which need to be separated (pers. comm.) [details]
