Abstract
The stability of structures on non-cohesive sand-beds depends among other factors on local scour due to the action of currents and waves. A review of the relevant parameters is given together with a discussion of their influence on the scouring process. The character of the process is demonstrated on the basis of some model experiments on offshore structures. For structures resting on the bottom, scouring will give unequal settling. The development of the scouring process is generally very rapid so that protective measures have to be taken beforehand.
